About Federation

Austria holds a distinguished place in the global history of Pencak Silat. In 1986, the city of Vienna hosted the first-ever Pencak Silat World Championship outside Asia, marking a significant milestone in the international expansion of the sport. This historic event positioned Austria as a pioneer in bringing Pencak Silat to Europe and laid the foundation for its long-standing presence in the region.

The development of Pencak Silat in Austria dates back to the early 1980s, when the national federation was established under the leadership of Günther Ertl. His efforts played a crucial role in introducing and organizing the sport within the country, creating pathways for both traditional practice and competitive participation.

Over the years, the federation has built upon this early foundation, although much of the detailed documentation from its formative period has been lost. This is largely due to the passing of key figures such as Günther Ertl and Eduard Linhart, who were instrumental in shaping the early direction and growth of Pencak Silat in Austria.

Despite these challenges, Austria continues to be recognized for its historical contribution and enduring legacy in the global Pencak Silat community, maintaining a tradition that spans several decades and connects Europe to the broader international Silat movement.
