Ikatan Pencak Silat Indonesia (IPSI) is the official national governing body for Pencak Silat in Indonesia, serving as the umbrella organization for all Pencak Silat schools and institutions across the country. Established on 18 May 1948 in Surakarta, IPSI plays a central role in preserving, developing, and promoting the art and sport of Pencak Silat at all levels.
IPSI was founded with the primary objective of coordinating and fostering Pencak Silat activities nationwide. Its mission encompasses the preservation of cultural heritage, the advancement of technical and artistic quality, and the continuous improvement of sporting excellence in Pencak Silat. The organization ensures that development is carried out in a structured, comprehensive, and sustainable manner.
The federation is committed to uniting the diverse schools and styles of Pencak Silat under one national framework. It promotes brotherhood, solidarity, and mutual respect among practitioners while enhancing the role of Pencak Silat in contributing to national identity, character building, and the overall development of Indonesia. IPSI also works to elevate the dignity and global recognition of Indonesian culture through this traditional martial art.
Organizationally, IPSI is founded on the principles of family, unity, togetherness, and solidarity within the framework of the Republic of Indonesia. It operates as a non-profit entity and maintains a neutral stance, with no political affiliation, orientation, or function.
As highlighted in historical records, IPSI emerged from earlier efforts to unify Pencak Silat across Indonesia, eventually becoming the central authority recognized nationwide.
Through its enduring commitment and structured governance, IPSI continues to safeguard the legacy of Pencak Silat while advancing it as both a cultural treasure and a modern competitive sport.
