About Member

Mr. Benny G. Sumarsono is a prominent figure in the global Pencak Silat community, known for his multifaceted contributions as an athlete, martial arts leader, and cultural ambassador. His journey in Pencak Silat began in 1970, and by 1978, he had already assumed leadership as Chairman of the renowned Pencak Silat Bangau Putih school.

He launched his competitive career as a free-class athlete at the World Pencak Silat Championship in 1984, marking the beginning of his influence on the international stage.

Beyond sports, Mr. Benny also gained recognition in the film industry during the 1980s, starring in approximately 15 martial arts films that showcased Pencak Silat to wider audiences. Some of his notable works include Bajing Ireng, Jaka Sembung (1985), Aji Pamungkas (1990), and Suromenggolo (1991). Through cinema, he played a vital role in promoting the cultural and artistic values of Pencak Silat.

In his administrative career, Mr. Benny served as Vice President of the Ikatan Pencak Silat Indonesia (IPSI), contributing significantly to the development of the sport at the national level. Since 2010, he has held the position of Executive Chairman of the International Pencak Silat Federation (IPSF – PERSILAT).

Following the launch of the “Pencak Silat Road to Olympic” initiative, Mr. Benny has been instrumental in modernizing the sport. He has led comprehensive improvements in competition rules and regulations, enhancing fairness, professionalism, and global appeal. His efforts have also strengthened governance structures and ensured alignment with international sporting standards, including the Olympic Charter.

 

A key aspect of his leadership includes advancing global certification systems for referees, judges, and coaches, thereby elevating the technical standards of Pencak Silat worldwide.
